Why The End Of Michfest is Good For Feminism

Good riddance!

“TERFs regularly out trans women, harass them and their employers, and send threatening messages to trans women (usually with the intention of pushing them to suicide).

Their violence doesn’t stop there. At a gay pride parade, Sylvia Rivera, a trans Latina stonewall veteran, was heckled and beaten off of the stage by cis lesbians. TERFs have even tried to kill trans women, as when they had snipers threaten trans activist Sandy Stone.”

Accomplices Not Allies

This is a great list of some of the issues surrounding the ally industrial complex and claiming ally as an identity. Ally is a VERB. You must be allying, in action, and in ways that are called for my the community you are seeking to ‘help’.

‘Girl Gone Wild’ – The Rust Of The Lone She-Wolf

” It lasts only a moment, but that first shot contains everything you need to know about why Wild is so important. It’s a story of a woman who hikes the Pacific Crest Trail for 94 days in the wake of her mother’s death, but more than that, it’s a story of a woman who is no longer anything to anybody. We’re so used to seeing women entangled with other people (with parents, with men, with children, in neurotic friendships with other women), that it’s surprising, almost shocking, to see a woman who is gloriously, intentionally, radically alone.”

Update From Today’s ‘Safe Space Now’ Action; 5 Women Arrested

This is happening RIGHT NOW in Toronto. OCAP is working tirelessly for the basic human rights of shelter and safety for some of the most marginalized groups of the homeless population – Women and trans folk in our city. WE ARE LITERALLY DYING! It is long past time for the city of Toronto to live up to it’s promises

“Indeed, earlier this year, OCAP and its allies pressed the City to open a
24 hour safe space drop-in. After a campaign of community mobilization, the
City relented and acknowledged the obvious need that such a space would
meet, promising that a women and trans folk’s space would open before the
start of the winter. But after endless committee meetings and other
stalling tactics, it seems that the City has forgotten its promise. OCAP
staged an action today, November 25, which is also the UN Day for the
Elimination of Violence Against Women, to highlight the City’s lack of
movement on this crucial issue.”

Yes, My Feminism Is Rachet; Reflections on Inclusive Feminism

” Well, because feminism is not a monolith, and no singular interpretation of feminism is perfect. These people fail to understand that (a) there are multiple ways to encounter ratchet music as a woman; and (b) there are also multiple ways to engage with and embody feminist principles. I reject the idea that to be a feminist, my life cannot be messy. I reject the idea that to be a feminist, I cannot engage with—and sometimes enjoy—“un-feminist-y” things. I reject any prescription of feminism that does not allow for a complex intersectionality.”
